Well when I was a kid, you either went by the 5 second rule or "god made dirt so it don't hurt"
When I lived with my parents, there was no option. If something hit the floor my dog would take care of whatever it was in about 2 seconds. She is very watchful of those kind of things. Also the house has a lot of dog hair no matter how much we vacuum so I wouldn't have eaten it anyway.
In my own house, it depends on the food and where the food landed. Pretty much anywhere but the bathroom I trust but that's a given.

I follow the 3 second rule...
If I pick it up off the floor in less then 3 seconds its still good to eat!!
If I pick it up after 3 seconds it goes in the bin!
It takes 4 seconds for germs to infect food!!

Some of my favorite foods are quite sticky or saucy like pasta and pizza. However, I do like chips, if a chip fell on my floor I think I'd eat it. But probably not a taco or a slice of pizza. They'd always fall on the non crust side anyway.

Depends... If it's an orange or a piece of chocolate I pick it up, clean it and eat it..:P If it's pudding, yogurt or something of that sort, of course I throw it :P =) Then again, it depends where I dropped it! I pick up the food I dropped only when I'm at home :P =)

There's no 3 or 10 second rule in our house. We have 2 cats and 1 dog walking on that very floor all day. Whatever hits the floor hits the garbage. "Bye bye cookie that touched floor that might have touched cat or dog bum!"

That depends on how clean the floor is, if anybody saw me drop it, and if there was any more of the food left.
