How can you not be if you love jazz music? He was one of the last remaining musicians that was around at the very beginning of bebop and remained a vital force in jazz up until the very end.
He was also an important educator and civil rights activist. He did a lot of work with children, teaching rhythm and percussion, and promoting jazz as a "world music" not just American music.

I'm a big fan of Max as a person.
WKCR.org has been playing Max's music and conversations he's had with DJ/jazz historian Phil Schapp. WKCR will continue featuring Max until Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007.
His conversations with Phil are great. Max talks with great pleasure about his be bop days. You don't get an education like that anywhere else. I don't know Max personally, but I kinda miss him, just from hearing him talk to his friend Phil.
