My father bought what he thought was a horseradish. The leaves look right but the flowers are deep yellow, almost daisylike and on very long stems. As far as I know all varieties of horseradish have small white flowers, so... Any ideas on what it actually is? Thanks. (No image, camera isn't working.)

My horseradish had pale yellow flowers. This late in the season you should be able to dig up a small piece and grate to be sure. The root is distinctive looking enough. I assume you are growing it to eat. If you have never prepared it before be warned it will make you cry worse than any onion. In commercial plants the workers wear goggles and breathing equipment. A food processor works great but have ventilation. Fresh horseradish is so much better, good luck.

Break off as leaf and smell it. Even the leaves of horseradish smell like horseradish. If you do not smell anything (or at leats not horseradish) than the plant is false.

Take a leaf to the garden center, NOT HOME DEPOT, and ask them, or, if you're brave, taste a leaf. They taste just like horseradish, only milder. They are delicious stuffed. Just like peppers.
