It depends on the laws in the state where the assault occurred and what type of assault; in some states, such as Virginia, there is no statue of limitations on felonies.

In a recent case in the news Michael Beebe was prosecuted (and ended up pleading out on) on a 21 year old rape case after he wrote the victim to apologize to her as part of his 12 step recovery in AA.

none stature of limitations ran out .im not sure but she only has a year to file a civil suite. if there were a good amount of evidence the d.a.would go after you
