It is a source of white noise, and it keeps us from being awakened or distracted by sounds like car horns, neighbors, trains, and so on. Some argue a connection with fetal sounds. It makes quite a difference when babies listen to music while still in the womb, especially when the mother is singing. I suspect that subconsciously, it conveys the feeling that all is well with the world.

Is it white noise? It always sounded sort of bluish-gray to me. It's even better when Doggie comes and curls up in the crook of my arm and snuffles in my ear.

when we are in the middle of night sleep the body is almost cant awake. but if we were awake at that time we almost could'nt sleep.
