Yes, passive RFID has been in use for many years. Those little badges we all use to get into high-tech buildings are one common form. The badge plate on the wall sends out radio energy. The chip in the badge extracts just enough energy from the signal to send out a response consisting of an ID code. The plate on the wall receives the ID code response and matches the response against a list of ID's authorized to use that door. If there's a match, the door opens. Same thing for the RFID chips implanted in livestock and domestic animals.

While it's certainly possible to stuff people full of chips against their will, the good news is passive RFID is only very useful for people and things that WANT to be identified. It works really well within short distances, 3-10 feet. But to REALLY track every human being everywhere they went, there would literally need to be millions and millions and millions of scanners. The scope and scale of the R&D, installation, tracking, data handling and error detection/correction would make the internet seem like a 1970's digital watch. With the mass pervasiveness of the detection units there is ZERO chance that there would NOT be public awareness of the situation and a proliferation of counter tactics to defeat the system.

Passive RFID works really well for identifying cattle, dogs and cats precisely because they don't know they are being tracked. But if Butch and Fido had brains and wanted to hide from the man, all they'd have to do is chew the damn things out of each others' shoulders.

No. It might be feasible, but I don't see the citizens of this country standing in line to have the procedure performed. Then again, Universal Health Care would provide the mass production facility to accomplish this. Go in for a flu shot, come out with a headache and a tracking implant.

Theoretically yes, but chances are very few would support it, let alone allow it. It would also cost millions, considering the immense surgical efforts needed to put one into every person.

You should watch 'The Bourne Identity' - pay particular attention to the start...And don't EVER let your new-born out of your sight. Big Brother is here, alive and kicking.
