In Greek mythology, the whale is the "cetus" -- a strange word which means whale (inc. orcas), sea-monster and giant shark at the same time -- the Greeks didn't know much about these creatures, except that they were big, lived far out at sea and looked pretty dangerous.

The two most famous stories of these are both about princesses chained to the rocks as sacrifice to the monsters -- Andromeda was rescued by Perseus, and Hesione of Troy by Heracles.

Naturally the Greek idea that whales were man-eating monsters was a bit of a misconception! But they had lots of strange ideas about animals back in those pre-scientific days!
