It's hard to say for sure because your question is so vague. I'm imagining a situation where someone is fortune-telling or telling people about the future in an attempt to make them feel better? Is this even close?
The problem is that lies, even when they make people feel better in the short run, are never the way to go.
The Bible contains evidence that false prophets, fortune tellers, etc. are destroyed. The person who is dispensing such advice inappropriately may find that he/she is in danger of being deceived and that his/her soul is in danger. I also feel sorry for the people who are being led astray by this person. Depending on the type of advice that's being given, they may be making unwise decisions based on this person's lies.
For people who are truly seeking guidance for their lives, there are resources that they can use. First, we can always pray and receive messages directly from the Holy Ghost. He is a very trustworthy source of guidance and direction from God. We can receive guidance through the word of God as written in scripture. Also, there are current prophets who are authorized by God and have the proper authority from Jesus Christ to provide information about the will of God to the inhabitants of the world, and they speak regularly to give us messages about how we should live. To learn more, please see this website: www.mormon.org.
In answer to your question, hope based in lies and deception is a false hope and therefore doesn't really help people at all. You should not condone such inappropriate actions.

Insufficient Data Error. A good carpenter has a God-given talent. If someone has no talent for carpentry, but manages to do a good job anyway, more power to him. Now if it isn't really a good job, and the house falls down on some church-members, that would be bad. What if the clumsy man works hard and becomes a good carpenter through his own efforts?

I'm not sure what you mean by "faking a God-given talent". It's not for us to judge someone, but "A tree is known by it's fruit". I go back to David, in the Bible. He refused to touch the Lord's anointed (in this case, King Saul) even though Saul was trying to kill David. He knew that God is in control, and that Saul would eventually get his "reward".

If it is a God given talent (that means they were born with the talent and they are a truly talented person) then how can they be faking it?

There is no such thing as "God given talent", our talents are our own, at best we inherit them from our parents. however, the need to pretend is an act of self glorification and indicates some fallacy of the pretender.
