Well, I hope you weren't planning for this halloween. You should've started awhile ago. Start it now, so you'll at least get something--maybe.

1) Plant at the right time - If you plant to soon, the pumpkin could rot before Halloween. Check the seed packet and see how long to maturity and count back from the next Halloween.
2) Give your pumpkin lots of room - Pumpkin vines get HUGE! If they don't have enough room, they don't grow well.
3) Pumpkins love sunshine - Plant them in a sunny spot.
4) Pumpkins love water - water frequently and evenly
5) Keep the Stem - When you harvest the pumpkin, make sure you leave plenty of stem on the pumpkin. This will help keep it from rotting till you can use it on Halloween.

It is fun to grow your own and have a choice of the best of the crop ! Pumpkins take about 100 days to grow. Next spring, you can go to a store that sells gardening plants, like tomatoes, and often find 4 little pumpkin plants in a little tray, already started. When you do harvest your pumpkins, keep them in a cool place until Halloween time. You will likely have enough to sell a few in your front yard, or give to friends/neighbors. Three or four plants product a lot ! Here's a link with more info.

My family used to grow pumpkins every year in our back yard.
We'd just plant the seeds, and water them. WARNING! They WILL take over your yard, and spread out, but at harvest time, you'll cut everything back and get rid of it.
Sometimes, where the pumpkin sets on the ground, it'll get a rotten spot (too much moisture), so we'd pick it up a little, and put a board under it to keep it off the ground.
