The other two are correct, but if you wanted more of a synopsis:
Evita is based on the life story of Eva Perón, the second wife of the Argentine president Juan Perón. Eva Duarte was born in 1919, illegitimate, poor, without privilege. She became the most powerful woman her country had ever seen, the First Lady of Argentina at the age of 27. She died in 1952 of cancer, aged 33. Evita is worshipped by her people. As a young girl, Eva quickly learns that the way to achieve the power she desires is by sleeping with powerful men. In order to make it to Buenos Aires, Evita sleeps with the tango singer, Agustin Magaldi. After she is through with him, she seduces the rising political figure, Juan Peron. Peron eventually becomes the President of Argentina while Eva becomes a hero to the poor and working class. In the end, to the sadness of Argentina's people, Eva dies young.

The musical is a semifictional account of Evita's life, and it's more about her than about her husband. Although he was the elected president of Argentina after WWII, and she didn't hold a public office, she became the most popular and most powerful woman in the whole Western Hemisphere. People either adored her or hated her, there was no middle ground.
Evita was also beautiful and glamorous, extremely photogenic and visible everywhere. Because she died young, at age 33 (cancer), and her body was embalmed, she became a sort of myth. She was buried secretly under a false name in a cemetery in Milan, Italy, for 17 years. Not even her family knew where the body was. It reappeared in the 1970's and was returned to Argentina after Peron's death.
The photographs taken before she was finally buried in Buenos Aires show the body to be intact. She's one of the best preserved mummies in the world.
