Hawaii was the 50 th state to join the United States in 1959.. Puerto Rico is a self-governing, unincorporated territory of the US and has Commonwealth status. As yet, Puerto Rico prefers to remain that way instead of becoming a 51st state.

there are 48 states in the mainland.
the 49th state, Alaska, is separated from the rest of the USA by Canada.
the 50th state, Hawaii, is separated from the mainland by the biggest ocean in the world, the Pacific.
US territories like guam, puerto rico, american samoa and saipan are NOT states.
i think there are moves to make the district of columbia a state but as of now it is NOT a state.
just count the stars in the US flag to know the number of states in the US. each star represents a state (although no particular star is assigned to a particular state)
the 13 stripes, on the other hand, represent the 13 original states.
