How many states are in the U.S.?

My friend's son's old friend's Grandpa's freind's grandson's teacher wants him to find out how many states are in the U.S. Someone in the class says 50, and someone says 51(including Potroe Rico). Please help!

Hawaii was the 50 th state to join the United States in 1959.. Puerto Rico is a self-governing, unincorporated territory of the US and has Commonwealth status. As yet, Puerto Rico prefers to remain that way instead of becoming a 51st state.

there are 50 states in all- 48 referred to as the contiguous United States, 2 others Alaska and Hawaii. Puerto Rico is a territory.

the 49th state, Alaska, is separated from the rest of the USA by Canada.

the 50th state, Hawaii, is separated from the mainland by the biggest ocean in the world, the Pacific.

US territories like guam, puerto rico, american samoa and saipan are NOT states.

i think there are moves to make the district of columbia a state but as of now it is NOT a state.

just count the stars in the US flag to know the number of states in the US. each star represents a state (although no particular star is assigned to a particular state)

the 13 stripes, on the other hand, represent the 13 original states.
