this would be a massive move to improve the infrastructure of australia and could be financed almost 100 % from sponsorship of oversea's organisations. It would be an enormous injection of new jobs to australian workers and could help to speed up the increase of australia's population.with clever management from the federal government it could realise after about 10 years or so.If we can build something like the snowy mountains hydro electric scheme or the Sydney harbour bridge all those years ago, then this project is definately worth a serious thought. this question is really aimed at the federal government ministers

There should a major city in the North West of Australia the amount of money that has come out of that area compared to whats been put back is a disgrace.
There is plenty of water up there so much that the governments are trying to work out a way to pipe it down which to me is stupid because you take the people to the water and stopped building in cities that cant sustain more people
We are the most urbanized country in the world because people will not get out of their comfort zone and don't want to give up any of their creature comforts.

Well the majority of Australia are moving to coastal cities and the inland rural areas are declining in population. Alot of the inland rivers are dry all year round. Only when australia has a la-nina do the rivers start flowing again. Quite a few of the outback towns use bore water because australia has a HUGE underground water basin which seeps from the highlands of Papua New Guinea Australia also doesnt have the money or population to start developing the outback either. Our politicians are too busy stuffing around to make time for anything constructive, its a bit sad.

To be honest i dont want Australia's population to grow too much. Our population size compared to land mass is part of our charm i think. Why should we get any bigger? Do we want to become like the UK or US or Many of the Asian countries, where there are so many people that we have no choice but to live on top of each other? We are very lucky to have such a small population. It means more access to sporting facilities such as gold courses, running tracks etc. It means more quiet little towns where you can excape the rat race. I don't want to change that

It can be done. The only thing preventing the building of cities in the outback is lack of fresh water. However, the outback has abundant solar power, which can be used to desalinate ocean water and pump it inland to the outback.

Wouldn't that be against the point?

Then the Outback wouldn't be isolated. That's why most people love it!
