I understand how it could affect the "cheater", but how does it affect the author?

The simplest analogy -- like being robbed of a most-prized possession which is your mind and intellect.

But if you're talking legally, I guess having to prove that he or she is the original writer and not the other way around.

Well right now with the internet and how easy it is to steal someone's work, it is one person's word against another. You may be proven right in the end, but you still may end up dragged through a lot of mud. Look at Dan Brown. It didn't hurt his book sales or his reputation, but it sure hurt his wallet. And maybe it did hurt his confidence a little because his next book is WAY overdue. Perhaps he is being overcautious with it. Just remember that a copyright is only as good as the lawyer you PAY to defend it. Mostly, it affects you financially. Pax - C

One of the key reasons is, I think, the author in question has not prove his/her originality. It is simply a shame to plagiarize from some sentences, paragraphs or pages without any reference, in other words, it is a widely-acknowledged standard for literary works. In fact, the issue is serious, therefore, it definitely has some negative effects like you mentioned. Please visit the website below for more details.

If I write something, maybe I spent a month on it, and invested that time and effort in hopes of seeing some result, whether it's attention or a book sale or whatever. If somebody swipes it, they gain the benefit of my time and effort without having done anything except steal my work.

The author is the cheater. Plagerism is theft. It's taking something that someone else wrote, and claiming that you wrote it yourself.

Money, the author doesn't get paid for work he did.

It doesn't. And if it does the author is a selfish prick. But you already knew that. I can tell from your question.
