My dad is usually a super active guy, but he has recently come across some health problems, and will have to be out of work for around a month, and can't do any of his favorite things ( such as hunting, fishing, and working in the garage. ) He lives alone, and well, isn't very techno-savvy, so renting him movies and whatnot is out of the question due to lack of dvd player. He is very stubborn and doesn't really do any type of puzzles or models. I need some help on things for him to do to keep his mind off of his health problems when no one can be with him.

Try coin collecting. It doesn't have to cost you a lot. You can go to the bank and pick of a box of coin (whichever denomination you like) for exactly face value. A box of pennies is $25, a box of nickels is $100, a box of dimes is $250 and boxes of half dollars or quarters are $500. The bank can pull out just $100 for you and you wouldn't have to buy all $500 if you didn't want to.

Once you get a box, you can go through and pull out the better coins (there are books to help with this or websites). You can pick up a coin book and try to fill all the holes or just search for interesting ones.

The coins that you don't want can be returned to the bank and put straight back into your account (though it's often better to return the coins to a different bank (not just a different branch but a different bank) so that you don't search the same boxes over and over). So you get most of your money back and you could then get another box.

Also check your change for interesting finds.

Some things to search for: wheat pennies, silver dimes, silver quarters, old coins, error coins, etc. There's always the chance that you could find something really valuable!

What I see from part of your question is a lack of funds. He could look into being a big brother. Getting him moving is something to look at. Puppy might help him out if he is all alone at the house. Better yet two dogs would take up some of the time. Now days a DvD player is about 30 bucks and then sign him up for netflix and or blockbuster online movie rental. As of now we do Netflix and have about 30 movies lined up still to see.

dvd player and netflix would help keep him from moving around to much if that is a issue.

Knex roller coasters might interest him. Gardening -- indoors in winter and outdoors later. Dog walking. Woodwork. Learning to bake or sew. Start an oral history project at a local seniors' residential facility. Volunteer at an animal shelter.

Get him on some sort of an Internet game, or maybe even onto this, he should have much fun on either and only needs to know how to get to it on the computer the rest is easy from there.

Since he likes fishing maybe he could try making fishing lures. Not only would it be something he could use when he gets to feeling better, he may be able to sell some to his fishing buddies.

He could make fly lurers and do leather work (belts, ammo pouches, vests). Then he could give them away for Christmas (four months away) gifts.
