absolute value is always positive.
-[4.2] is the same as -4.2
the absolute value of -4.2 is 4.2

The Absolute value of a number is the magnatiude only. I.e. Positive value only.

So the absolute value of -4.2. is 4.2

But if those are absolute value symbols i.e. -|4.2| then it's minus the absolute value of 4.2 which is -4.2

the negative is outside of the brackets so the value is -4.2
