In Texas you need to have the base degree that gives you the knowledge in your subject. Also you will need eventually to have a teaching certificate. Though when they need someone they will start them with the understanding it will be completed in a set amount of time. Also a requirement to teach in Texas is having taken Texas History. Most people in Texas take it in 7th grade, but it is available correspondence and may be taken while in the teaching position.

Incidentally in the northern half of San Antonio Alone they will be hiring over 2000 new teachers this year, so get your applications ready.

A good way to start is to substitute, let the district know you are interested in a long term assignment, then you can get a long term substitute assignment during illness or pregnancy, if they like you they will often pick you up for a position the next year.

You can also take any required course while substituting and over the summer.

Please reconsider your decision to become a teacher, especially in History. Liberal Arts degrees aren't worth much these days, and there are already too many history majors vying for the few teaching positions out there. Also, check out the nationwide requirements under NCLB regulations. Sad to say, teaching has become a job that is sneered at, ridiculed, and underpaid. I would strongly discourage my children from taking on a job where they'd be subjected to verbal abuse on a constant basis. As a teacher, I've seen too many young, optimistic, teachers enter the field, only to become disillusioned and leave due to the miserable working conditions.

Go to the TEA.org website. Or call Region 20 here in San Antonio. I believe if you have a bachelor degree, you can still challenge the ExCet test by just taking the next ExCet exam. Things may have changed so call Region 20 or check out the website...
