That's a "florist's gloxinia;" unfortunately, it's likely that a florist is the only place it's going to be found. They are relatives of African violets, in the family Gesneriaceae, but a different genus - Sinningia, rather than Saintpaulia. They are considerably more difficult to grow, and especially to get to flower. Just about any grocery store florist will have one, though; they're very common gift plants. Just don't get one and expect it to bloom again - it requires a rather complicated cycle of light and dark periods as well as a change in temperature before it will bloom again. I've been growing African violets for 30+ years, and haven't ever managed to get a "sinn" to re-flower. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy a plant, though, and you should be able to find one fairly easily. Good luck!

Try the San Gabriel Nursery and Florist. They are a monstrous nursery that includes a florist. If they don't have it, ask them who might--there are a lot of florists around there. If you've never been it's an amazing nursery.

Of course you're more likely to find a high quality plant there than at a supermarket, and they will be able to tell you how to take care of it.

You should definitely call or write first, unless you're also looking for an excuse to go to a great nursery.

I live in Pasadena and I've been there many times, but I've never looked for that particular plant.

For those not from the area, San Gabriel and Monrovia are nearby small cities in the San Gabriel valley a few miles east of Los Angeles.
