A radical wants to overthrow the system (or drastically change the status quo) in a progressive forward matter. The Radical Republicans of the northeast for example.
A liberal wants incremental change to improve society. That means expanding civil rights and social freedoms and using government to alleviate poverty, pollution, corruption, etc.
A conservative opposes change and prefers the status quo, traditional values, etc, etc. Because the American mainstream has continuously moved to the left in the long run, conservatives have become synonymous with the right. Today's conservative holds positions that were liberal only in the past.
And
A fundamentalist is similar to a radical in that he wants drastic change, but unlike a radical, the change this person seeks is to "turn back the clock" to an idealized time that never really existed.
