You can also use a NEXUS card at participating airports as an alternative to a passport when entering the United States by air. You can apply online to NEXUS using the Global Online Enrollment System (GOES) that is operated by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (U.S. CBP https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov/
You can also take a bus from as an example Windsor to Detroit and grab a domestic flight from Detroit to Kansas City without a passport. A bus usualy has a special customs line that is a lot faster then driveing or walking across the border simply get off the bus walk through showing your Canadian ID and get back on the bus.

You need a passport for any international flight. It's not a Kansas City thing, it's a US government thing. KCI doesn't have any inbound international flights anyway, so you'd have to check in at another airport.

Yes. If you are passing from Canada to the US -- you need a passport.
If you stay in Canada then you don't. If you stay in the states then you don't. But one to the other -- you do. I flew up there this summer and my cousin and I drove down to CA to visit my uncle and we had to show our passports when we were in the air and when we were driving. Crazy!
I hope you enjoy KC!!

If you're flying from Canada to Kansas, then yes. If you're flying within the U.S. then I don't know.
