Oil and money.

It allowed Bush to act like a dictator. He can eavesdrop on whoever he wants without a warrant or anything. He can arrest anyone off the street and whisk them away to a foreign prison where he can have them tortured until they admit to anything he wants. He has even suspended habeas corpus. He can throw buckets of taxpayers dollars at his buddies in fat noncompetitive contracts for which they are entirely unaccountable. He can spend money like there's no tomorrow while still pretending to be fiscally responsible. He can even issue an executive order disabling the Constitution in the case of 'emergency' and making him a dictator, and -he- is the one who decides if it's an emergency or not.

And anyone who criticizes him too publicly for any of this can be declared a 'traitor'. Only in time of war.

I don't think anyone would disagree that Bush wouldn't have had a chance in hell of getting a second term if not for the war in Iraq.

I doubt greatly we would declare war on Iraq as they are our allies.
