can anyone recognize an apple tree from its
first 6 inches of growth? [meaning 6 inches

Yes, an apple has certain characteristics that are easily recognized by someone that knows what they are looking for. They usually have a similar looking bark (although when young it is often green rather than brown) and the leaves are the same shape but smaller than a full grown tree. E-mail me some pictures and I can tell you for sure.

Many varieties of apple are crossbred hybrids and the seeds planted from the core of an apple, generally will not produce the same variety of apple as the fruit seed that was planted. The seeds from a Red Delicious for instance, will produce one of the parent plants (typically either a crab apple or golden delicious). Just FYI.

Not likely. You will have to see what the fruit looks like eventually. It could be a hybrid since you planted seeds. If you want a certain type of apple you usually plant a tree grown with a graft.
