Otis is to elevators what Carrier is to air conditioning and Birdseye is to frozen food.

Here's a link to a .pdf file that gives the milestones in the history of the Otis Elevator Company.

Hope it helps.

Despite what people think, OTIS DID NOT INVENT THE ELEVATOR. Otis invented the governor safety device that allowed for high-rise elevators in buildings. The governor safety device would prevent the elevator from plunging to the bottom in case of cable breakage or overload.

Also despite what people think, hydraulic elevators are also electric, a motor turns a pump which turns electrical energy into mechanical energy which raises the elevator up and down. The valve in the feed line to the piston is also electriconically controlled.

The reason people started to use electric elevators is because of the invention of the DC motor and the availability of electricity made it more practical to use electric motors to move elevators rather than steam powered motors.

Steam engines/motors had way more moving parts than electric motors, so the idea was was to have more reliable equipment.
