FDR, the democratic president at the time had a lot of criticism from the republicans who really did not want the USA to go fight the fascist nazis and stop their quest for world domination. Anyone know why the republicans took that position? If we had listened to them we would all have swatstikas flying in front of our homes.

They were following the lead of the American public of the time. Many in the public didn't want to go to war to fight what many considered an 'European War' and therefor wasn't any of our concern. The politicians listened to what the public was saying but once Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and Germany declared war on the United States the politicians and the public changed their opinions

America had built its empire as an isolationist country. They minded their own business and let others go about theirs. Some saw America's involvement as unnecessary and thought getting into the war would just be toiling in other peoples' business.
The U.S. was gladly supplying Britain on a cash and carry policy, but it took a direct attack at Pearl Harbor to get us involved militarily.
Also, we very likely would not have swastikas in front of our homes. Even if America acted only defensively, it would have been pretty easy to win the war if Germany brought it to North America. And I'm sure nobody would have criticized that.
