An idealist is an individual whose life is guided by ideology rather than simple pragmatism. When you live life by a set of rules which you believe define the 'good life', then you are an idealist. If you believe that there are fundamental truths that positively define the human condition then you too may be an idealist. Principles are largely synonymous with ideals.

An idealist is one who has yet to give up hope. They know what should be. They understand that this world is not ideal. Idealists are not fools, or naivettes. They know their idealism is doomed to fail, it is that they determine to try anyways. It is a small vendetta against acceptance of a fate we did not pick. Or rather that , even though most of our actions decide where we go, it counts for something to wish for more than the casual deceptions we play into.

An idealist is:
- different from an optimist ... too many complainers say something great is not good enough because it is not ideal
"Perfect" (eg, a perfect apple) is something that fulfills the requirements, but can still be better.
"Ideal" is the extreame vision for a thing's potential. It may only exist in the realm of thoughts (according to Berkeley)
