My laptop tends to overheat very fast, and turns off by itself. This usually happens while I'm watching a video, or downloading something. I have a windows Xp, hewlett packard/ hp pavillion dv4000.

Thanks.

Try getting a laptop cooler. Walmart sells for around 20-25.00 for 1. Of course you could go on e-bay and maybe find 1 cheaper but you may wait a couple of weeks to get or just go out to Wal-Mart and get 1 NOW. Would be FASTER

if your laptop turn off by itself, it could be due to your RAM problem. technically most factors are due to the RAM. if you have a 3D graphic card in your laptop, try to level the performance to reduce the heat. the heat may actually deteriorate the overall performance and result in hanging up or shut down. also check the fan if it is running or not. if your laptop is old you may need cleaning up.

Purchase a cool pad at Walmart, and clean the laptop

it could also be that the internal fan is not working as it should, it may need cleaning...

You could buy yourself a cool base for your laptop. it is a base with fans on that you place the laptop on and keeps it cool.

do a web search for

laptop+cool base
