No not at all. Actually the "Par Smear" part of your annual GYN exam is very short, lasting less than 2 minutes!! Having an annual GYN exam is usually not a painful process at all. The worst part is just being plain uncomfortable. Having someone down in that area you know?
You will show up for you appt, talk with the nurse for a few minutes , let her know if you having any problems. Then you will go to the exam room and be asked to chnage out of your clothes into an exam gown (they suck lol)
The doctor will come in, ask you to lay back, scoot ALL THE WAY down on the table and place you feet in the stirrups. Then they will tell you to relax!!! LOL, yea, no one relaxes when they are exposed like that, but try to!! Teh doctor will have a look around, open up your vagina so he/she can take a sample of tissue from your cervix (very quick, a not painful). Then he/she will feel around your abdomen for cysts and do a breast exam.
Thats really about it, unless you have any questions

PLEASE REMEMBER THO, A PAP SMEAR JUST TESTS FOR CANCEROUS CELLS NOT STD'S!!!!! STD tests are done seperatley!! Doesnt take any additional time, but it has to be tested seperatley.

Getting A Pap Smear

Pap smears aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. First, you'll be put in a private room and you'll be asked to undress. You can leave your socks on, but that's the only article of clothing that's allowed. You'll have a paper gown to put over yourself. There's normally a heat lamp on the ceiling (in most places) to help you stay warm. Your Dr. may do a breast exam to check for lumps or any abnormalities. She (or he) may do a circular motion, check your nipples, etc.

Next, you'll be asked to scoot to the very end of the exam table and put your feet into stirrups. This can be a bit embarrassing, but keep in mind that she (or he, again) has done this numerous times, and there's nothing to be worried about. Your Dr. will insert a speculum- a thin plastic tool that's used so she can see your cervix. She'll take a small swab and gather some cells from your cervix for your pap smear. Next, she may press on your stomach just to check your uterus. After that, your done!

It's not painful, per say, just a bit uncomfortable.

The only thing to be scared of, is having an undetected abnormality if you DON'T get one!

The Dr will get you to undress from the waist down and usually provide a modesty towel or sheet for you to cover yourself with.

They will then get you to lie in a certain position, this can vary but most common is on your back, bend your kneesup, then keeping your feet together let your knees drop apart to either side.

They will then move the modesty covering to enable them to see what they are doing and insert an instrument that looks a little like a pair of scissors with spoons where the blades should be. This is slightly uncomfortable (particularly if cold!) but doesn't hurt. They use this to spread your vagina. (Remember your vagina is able to stretch far enough for a baby to emerge, so this is not realy stretching it at all!) They then use another instrument too gently scrape some cells from the surface of your cervix. (A bit like scraping the white stuff off your tounge). Again, slightly wierd feeling but doesn't hurt.

They send these cells away for testing, remove all instruments and replace modesty covering, leaving you to get dressed again.

Slightly embarassing and slightly uncomfortable, but necessary! And after a few, you won't even worry about it!

Of course not. The test is an absolute necessity to ensure your continued good health. The doctor will be completely professional and will tell you every step of the way what he or she is about to do. If you have any questions NEVER be afraid to ask!

Start to finish the exam (including the physical, breast, pelvic, and question session) should take about 10 minutes.

Personally, I find going to the dentist more dreadful than going to the gynecologist!

i was TERRIFIED for years. i only had my first one at 29 and only because i had a full std/hepatitis/hiv screen for 'risky' behvaviours i've since given up.

i was a crying mess in the surgery BUT in hindsight, there really wasn't anything to worry about whatsoever. my main concern was having someone check me over in a non-intimate setting!!

these are routine exams by your doc. don't stress, just book it and do it. you'll be glad you did once it's all over and done with. remember, the fear of doing something is usually much worse than the thing itself!
