1) Clashing Values between the West and the fundamentalist Muslim. The Christians believe in order to make the religion stay in power, their religion should be separated from politics. Fundamentalist Muslims believes the religion and politic should go together
2) Muslims claims that the Americans do not respect the Islamic intellectuals or fundamentalist. The Americans have always taken advantaged of the Muslim civilians. Consequently, the Middle Easterners view the United States and the European nations as the giant enemies. This belief exists because of the United States has a friendly relationship with the Jews in Israel.
3) The Islamic fundamentalists believes the western (U.S.) have been the strongest supporter of the corrupted regimes such as Saddam's regime in 1990, Pakistan's regime, Saudis Royal Family, etc.
4) They don't want American Troop in the Gulf Regions. They want Americans to leave the Arab natural resource, cultures, and people alone.
5) Hatred.

There is no better way than to get into the mind and understanding of the person responsible other than from his own mouth. Below is another link to an interview done recently after the attacks.

The religious implications are important, but in the sense that for Islam, the religion and the state are one. It has nothing whatsoever to do with 'hating Christian nations.' That is the belief of ignorant people who don't know anything about Islam. Also, the 'hating our freedom' claim by Bush is absolute nonsense as well.
The simple reality is the extremist hatred of the Western presence in the Middle East (specifically the American control of Saudi Arabian politics) as well as the Western support for Israel.

I think it is because religion has poisoned people. Islam is similar to Christianity, in that venomous and hateful fundamentalists are able to convince ordinary people that hatred is OK. Suicide is one of the worst sins that a Muslim can commit-yet people manage to convince themselves that it is the right thing to do.
God must weep. Muslims and Christians alike ignore His powerful message of love and forgiveness and tolerance, choosing instead to hate and kill in His name.
The challenge to us all is to not fall into the trap of hating Muslims--the vast majority of whom are peace-loving and decent folk.
I'm Christian, by the way--just not a nasty one.

Why do they hate America?
Wow, great question. I can assure you it's not because we have freedom, power or wealth. That's too easy of an excuse and does not require any thought.
I am a U.S. Veteran of Desert Storm. I've traveled outside the U.S. extensively and discovered (to my dismay) that Americans were disliked around the world long before 1991, for a few reasons. But I'll limit it to the main reasons...
1) Because we are over there interfering in the name of OIL! It goes as far back the Shaw of Iran. In case you have forgotten, or may be too young to remember, Pahlavi is the son the the late Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was the Shaw of Iran from 1941 until his overthrow in 1979. He was the second Shaw of the Pahlavi dynasty, which made him a king of the Islamic nation, even though the country operated under the actual rule of a parliament and prime minister.
In those days Great Britain had its teeth embedded deep in the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, which was a pillar of England’s economy and political power. But in 1951, the Iranian parliament, led by Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, voted unanimously to nationalize the oil industry. A month later Mossadegh was named prime minister of Iran. In response, Britain placed an embargo on Iranian oil exports and pressed for a political overthrow of Mossadegh’s power.
Even that rich oil deposit under the sands of the Middle East was behind the politics of the area. With Dr. Mossadegh virtually running the affairs of Iran, western powers became alarmed when Iran’s Communist Tudeh Party grew in power and aligned Iran and its immense oil resources with the Soviets. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, directed the C.I.A. to work with British intelligence in masterminding a coup that eventually toppled Mossadegh from power.
The overthrow of Mossadegh put the Shaw back in the driver’s seat. He established improved relations with the neighboring nations, and because of his great oil wealth, Mohammad Reza Shah became the pre-eminent leader of the Middle East. In 1975 he abolished the multi-party system of government and ruled through a one-party state in autocratic fashion.
The Shaw’s good relations with Israel and the United States, and his active support for women’s rights, caused a rift with the fundamentalist Islamic groups who attacked his policies. It was in 1979 that the Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran, established a revolution that brought about the dissolution of the monarchy. The Ayatollah appointed an interim government of his own, and the Shaw was forced to flee Iran.
The Shaw became a man without a country after that. He went to Egypt, later lived in Morocco, the Bahamas and Mexico. But he became ill with lymphoma and needed medical treatment. When President Jimmy Carter gave him permission to enter the United States for treatment, the decision angered the Iranian revolutionaries. They demanded the Shaw’s return to Iran to face a trial and execution. Carter’s refusal led to the kidnapping of workers at the U.S. embassy in Tehran.
2) Because we don't know why they hate us. When you're a country completing for resources that you desperately need there's nothing worse than being ignored.
3) Also, because we are an ignorant society. But that's mostly because our government wants to keep us ignorant. When you're desperate for low cost energy (oil), it's better to have an uninformed, uneducated society. This makes it easier to control and decieve (keep drinking beer, watching game shows, and sports on tv) while our policy makers rape and pillage the rest of the planet in the name of all Americans.
The CIA calls this "blow back". Basically, when we go over there and push our agenda in the name of oil, they take our hostages or crash planes into buildings.
America cannot afford to keep fighting endless wars against "terrorist". We need to set the moral example for the world and give them something to emulate.
We need to learn to vote for a leader who will save us...

Also, why can't Christians just let people be? I know the Bible tells you it's your job to convert the world, but I think we would be better off if we allowed the rest of the world to believe and worship who THEY choose.
