There are so many books out there, one of them being "Biografia a dos voces: Fidel Castro" or "La historia me absolvera" were you can find the answers to all your questions. You will learn how much Fidel wanted to save his country from corruption, from being the playground it was for the rich and famous americans, how much he struggled (meaning he went out there and fought!) to make a better place of that beautiful country where there was so much abuse from Batista, which by the way was a puppet of the US government, that way he had to flee the country when Fidel stepped up for the rights of the poor peeple in Cuba. Like in any systems, there are mistakes to the socialist system in Cuba, and unfortunately people just focus on the bad things...... what about the GREAT things he has done for his country?? Also, I would say he is one of the few (if not the only) President that has not become rich while being in power,... because he doesn't care about imperialism!! unlike the rest of the world. I'm totally with him, there are so many other better things in the world than material things,... like living in a safe country, and having medical coverage for your entire life no matter what, the BEST EDUCATION just to name a few.... there are so many great things this man has done, and I wish him health and prosperity.... and Yes, History will absolve him!!!... viva Fidel!!!

In the 1950s Cuba was run by a right-wing dictator, Batista who was backed by the US government (influenced by special interests). In the late 50s a liberation movement--a revolt--started, led by Fidel Castro. Initially, needing help, Castro appealed to the US but was rejected.
Up to that point, Fidel was not a Communist--though his brother Raoul was. When the US refused to help the popular uprising, Raoul convinced Fidel to join the communist party and seek help from the Soviet Uniion--which Moscow was only too happy to provide. With Soviet aid, Fidel was able to overthrow Batista and seize power in Cuba.

I'm not so sure I would be quick to call Batista a ruthless dictator. Fidel had a small band of men loyal to him. They trained in the mountains and became an orgainzed military outfit. They tried several times to seize power. Eventually, through the use of brute force, they were successful.

The US (and the mob) backed a ruthless dictator named Batista. The Cuban people backed the only other game in town, unfortunatley for them it was a ruthless Communist dictator who has ruled unhappily ever after 1959.

He took it from a dictator - because he was going to reform the country and make it better.
Apparently, it didn't work out so well.
