We have been harassed in a variety of ways by a neighbor for the past 6 years. This neighbor is a city employee. One of his things he likes to do is put up a NO TRESPASSING sign (and move it to various locations along our property line) with an American flag duct taped to it up to our fence facing only our yard, My husband is from Vietnam. How would you take this? What would you do? We find this very offensive.

I would find those actions to be racist and offensive too. My own father would kinda do the same thing to his neighbors who were Jehovah's Witnesses. How ironic that I would convert after his death. But I digress. If the sign is on your fence, then take it down. If it seems like a confrontation could happen, just keep in mind to keep your cool and realize that there are many people in this world who have their own "demons" and need others to take it out on. Pity them.

Patriotism is love of your country. Racism is hatred of other racial or ethnic or religious groups (technically other races, but it is used to cover a lot of territory today). If somebody equates their country with just one race, and then considers others to be outsiders or something, then the two might come across the same way, but it's still racism, even under the banner of patriotism. People are individuals, Black, White, Asian, Muslim, Jew, Christians, etc. are all individuals. There are good and bad individuals in every group, and there are some kind of in the middle. To blame an entire race or religion because you don't like some is not right. In America, I think, while some disagree, the idea of the "melting pot" is one of the things that makes America great. I don't know how it is thought of in Britain or other countries, which did not have a history of immigrants until recently, probably..

It's not patriotism. With the flag and everything, it's pretty obvious he's sending a message that he doesn't think your husband deserves to be in "his" country. I believe it's racist, ethnocentric, bigoted, immature and disrespectful.

Racism has kind of become overused, so I might instead just call it harrassment, because that's what it is and it gets the point across. I would be offended even if I shared all sorts of things in common with the guy. It's annoying, distracting and discomforting.

Approach him face to face, tell him you understand he prefers that people don't trespass onto his property, that you don't ever intend to do so, and ask him if he would kindly remove the sign.

If he doesn't, see if the police will do something about it.

That's racism, not patriotism.

I'd find an attorney who could advise you of your rights in how to deal with this neighbor. The fact that he is a city employee makes matters worse.

It seems like the racist bully is trying to get you to sell your home and move.

If there is more to it than the flag you might consider something else....... If he treats you bad because of your race, it's racism. The sign facing your yard only is kind of odd. I'm 100% white american and say shame on him.......... Sorry you have to deal with an idiot like that if it is more than just "patriotism"

Make a sign that says "I wasn't planning on trespassing" and put like every flag in the world on it or something to that effect, be creative.

Thats an example of negative energy that you have no responsibility for . Therefore in your thoughts send it back to him and don't accept it.. To react to it absorbs it and he wins... I would think it would be wonderful to live next door to someone from a different country..

Just ignore it! It is knowing that you are reacting to his juvenile tactics, that your neighbour is motivated to continue. Don't get provoked.
