In 2 separate instances recently, a homeowner and a car owner were shot to death when they caught criminals breaking into their respective property. If you caught someone breaking into your car or your house, would you approach them? Or would you keep your distance and call the police, suspecting that they may be armed?

If you do approach them, what do you say? "Hold on while I call the police." doesn't seem to work well. Assaulting them may wind YOU up in jail.

What is the most recommended solution in a situation like this?

Bad guy breaking into the house - I'm getting me and my family out the other side of the house. Don't try to be a hero if you don't have to. Stuff can be replaced - your loved ones and you can't. Only confront b/c there is no other choice.

My fiance was killed by a robber in a convince store robbery. At his sentencing the murderer said "he wasn't behind the counter like I had planned, I panicked I didn't know what to do." The guy was carrying a knife and without demanding money or taking anything, just stabbed by fiance who was stalking a shelf.

If my home was broken into, no I would not approach the person intentionally. Now if I walked out of my bathroom and there was someone I'm not sure what exactly I'd do. My first priority would be to secure the safety of my baby and pets. On that note I just might be very well MORE concerned about the safety of my big dog even more than that of my child.

It would seem that burglars don't like to encounter big dogs and either a) run into one unexpected and will kill it rather than find out its friendly or b) have scoped out the house already and have no fear of the animal within.

Since most robberies happen during the day, I would likely be in the basement with smaller with the baby, small dog and two cats. I would close and lock my bedroom door (in the basement) and call the police from there. My big dog would likely be in the back yard with my roommates' big dog barking his head off at the criminal for intruding. If there was reason to feel threatened beyond that, I'd go out the "fire escape" window in my bedroom with my baby and run to the neighbours house.

Nervous people can panic in the worst ways.

I'm a retired cop. Most of the time I am not armed anymore and I no longer carry restraints as a matter of course.
I have gone headfirst into thousands of dangerous situation, both on and off duty, but never when my family was around.
I back off and call for help or if immediate action is needed I got them away first.
What I am saying is, if the bad guy isn't yet confronting a person pull back and call the cops. If there is direct confrontation do not act defensively until you feel the bad guy is going to do more than go for the money. Then act quickly, decisively and then run away as fast as you can, screaming your head off.

In most cases, I'm staying away. Depending on who the person may be (physically wise basically) I may approach, but about 80% of the time, no.

The law for assaulting someone breaking in is ridiculous, and really leaves no other option other than staying away.

I see no benefit from approaching a thief, unless you know 100% they're not armed.

I would bring everything that I had to an event like that. I would not bother calling the police, rather an ambulance. Dig this, if somebody is breaking into my house, one of us is going to die.
