I never chose to be straight, so I don't believe very many people at all choose to be gay.
And I don't know what in the Hell there would be about being gay in this society that would convince someone to choose such a thing. The treatment they receive is pretty awful, and since a fairly small percentage of people in the country are gay, it limits one's options for love.
This sounds bad, but I would rather people thought of it as a mental disorder than a simple choice. Although I do NOT believe it's a mental disorder, such a thought might at least evoke a little bit of compassion, and it's a lot closer to describing the involuntary nature of one's feelings and attractions.

I'm gay and I'm not sure what I believe.
What I do know is that I definitely do not think that you can choose to be gay. I don't think people would knowingly choose to be a minority if it meant not being accepted by people if they knew that you were gay. It's difficult because, at least for me, it was hard for me to have friends that were boys because they thought that I would try to hit on them or I would somehow threaten their heterosexuality.
As to whether I was born gay or not is hardly the issue. I think people focus so much on whether someone is born gay rather than accepting them as they are, and that it doesn't change who the person is. It doesn't really matter whether I was born gay or not, I just want to be myself and I want people to accept me as being gay. I most certainly didn't choose to be gay. I wouldn't knowingly choose to be something that would mean scrutiny from many people. These feelings just developed and there was nothing I could do about them. I can't help who I like. It took me quite a long time to become comfortable being gay, and I don't think it changes me as a person at all.

People are definitely born gay. The thing that convinced me of that was having kids of my own. First, I had a son. He is into sports and everything he does involves a ball. Then, I had a girl. I thought she was doomed to be a tomboy from the start because she'd follow her brother around and play sports with him. I was wrong. She is naturally attracted to stuff like clothes and makeup and doesn't really give a hoot about sports (they are still very young). Anyway, the point is, people are born the way they are, and that's that. You can't force yourself to prefer one sex over another. If you could I can guarantee there'd be more lesbians out there cause men are too much trouble to deal with!!! (kidding, guys, just kidding- sort of...haha).

Certainly I was born gay. I knew I was attracted specially to males and not to females by age 8. I knew it was sexual and found out the name by age 11. I had my first b/f around the time of my 14th birthday.
I have never had any attraction to females. There was no choice involved, except the choice of whether to be self-hating and bitter, or happy and loving. An easy choice for me since I did not come from a self-hating background, so I just happily embraced the person I was.
Kind thoughts,
Reyn

I feel that I was born bisexual because I remember being 8 years old and being fascinated by the half-naked native women in my Mom's National Geographic mags. At 9 I found her stash of Playgirls and at 14 I found my Dad's Playboys and loved them all. For those reasons and the fact that I'm attracted to all genders now, i believe I was born bisexual.

The vast majority of gay people I have known say that they feel as though they were born homosexual.
The folks who identified themselves as bisexual do not say the same thing, they say that they are still confused or haven't made up their minds.
So I would say that exclusively gay folks are born that way and that others are born straight and yet others are born confused/undecided

Hmmm, I would restate the question like this: Are they born with their sexual orientation?
The thing is that it would still be an uncompletely answered and interesting question. There are theories which take into consideration genetic factors, hormonal factors during pregnancy, psychological factors during childhood....
One important thing to keep in mind is that everybody deserves respect and human rights do not depend on sexual orientation....
