im only 15 but im disgusted at how some teens are really disrespectful to their elders, especially. like when i see kids talking back to teachers, and sometimes their parents even back them up!! also, its terrible when children scream at their parents when they dont get what they want ((a great example is the tv show super sweet sixteen)). i know 50 years ago this would have been totally unacceptable.

why is this happening and has anyone else noticed this?

because their parents let them get away with it! they aren't taught respect. my parents let me know i'm never to old to be punished, and i think thats something a lot of kids need to keep in mind. the thing with super sweet 16 is that the kids really play it up for the cameras.

Well, every generation thinks this of the one behind but since you are one of them...here is my input.

One word: Entitlement. Basically, when a person feels "entitled" they believe everything should be handed to them. They should get what they want when they want it. Usually it happens when they haven't ever learned to delay gratification, (getting something they want).

Maybe what you are seeing are kids who believe they should be able to say what they want when they want, get what they want when they want it, do what they want when they want to. -Entitled kids. -And it doesn't happen just with rich people. You can be poor and entitled also. It's a matter of learning, (or being taught) you need to wait for some things that you want. Period.

It's how life works. If you go on living your life with this sense of entitlement you end up very, very disappointed, (and usually more and more angry) when the rest of the world doesn't see your needs as urgently as you do. -Cause that's how the real world works.

So keep on noticing those differences and realize that delaying getting what you want is a really good skill to learn. It actually is a good predictor of how successful you will be. Really!

It was like this in the 90s.

And 80s.

And 70s.

It's a phase of development, not a period in history. Teenagers often go through this time when they need to become independent and therefore reject some of the limits and rules adults place on them. It's normal, and it might seem like they are more difficult than they ever were, but people have been saying the same thing for a long time.

Yes. I also think people of all ages are more disrespectful these days than in times past. There is a lack of shame in society today. We are taught to be tolerent of others and embrace diversity. This has resulted in excepting lower and lower standards of public decency. Our ability to recognize and identify poor behavior has been diluted by societal outcries for tolerance and openness towards ignorant and disruptful behavior. At 15 you have a full life in front of you and I encourage you to surround yourself with intelligent decent people and enjoy life.

I've noticed it, too, and I'm 15 as well. They need to be more like our recent ancestors and just beat the living watch-your-mouth out of those kids. It's not just teens, though, it's kids in general. It might just be a carefree generation of parents, or something, but whatever it is, I'm glad I'm not a part of it.

For a 15er, you're observant. Bratty, yes, many are (but not all, I think) but that's what happens when children (including teens) arn't disciplined. If I had my own kids and they defied me that way, I'd discipline them real good. No beating, though.

Hello,

Like the officer's handbooks say around the world; there is no such thing as good and bad soldiers, only good and bad leaders. I find this outlook applies to parents and their subordinates (children) as well.

Cheers,

I know. It just makes us look so...why...... Y-U-C-k-Y. I'm a teen to and I don't like the fact that I don't respect my parents, especially my mommy. I should get a big smack on the head. Good thing I'm improving.
