the second computer is an older computer (win98) but does have access to a phone plug. The newer computer (winXP) has DSL upstairs. How can my uncle get high speed on his win98 computer.

I don't think he wants a wire coming down from the upstairs computer and he probably doesn't want his win98 computer to connect wireless through a wireless router. What are his options? thanks so much.

If you have DSL to the house in general, any phone plug should be able to get DSL service. You will need a modem for each computer. Many times your phone company will rent you a second one for a reasonable price.

Typically, when the phone company installs DSL, they put filters (small inline plugs) on each phone cord. To use DSL on a line other than the main one where the phone company set you up, you need to see if the line has a filter on it (on the phone cord itself). If it does, you need to remove it. If you want a phone and DSL plugged into the same jack, you can use a splitter and split the line into two lines, then put the filter on the line where the phone will be.

Even though both computers can use DSL like this, you may have to check with your phone company. Some of them don't allow sharing and will block it at the NID (the box outside your house). Most don't bother doing that anymore, but if you're having problems, that might be the reason.

Hope that helps.

He does not have too many options (especially with Win98).
1) Get another DSL modem
2) If he does not need to use the phone line, you could rewire it to carry Ethernet traffic (you need to know how to crimp wires and correct pin-out)
3) You can try to install a wireless router and put a wireless network card into his PC, but there is no guarantee that it will work with Win98.

You can not use 2 dsl connections to the same line. You need to get a router and connect that in place of your existing modem, then connect the machines to the router.

Yes. It sounds like you need a wireless router. That way, the other comptuer could get a wireless DSL connection.
