If you are landing at San Francisco International look for the free AirTrain shuttle to the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station. We bought tickets from a clearly marked machine and entered a very clean modern rail system. Within 30 minutes we arrived our downtown stop. There are well posted signs for the station close to pier#35. Everyone we met or talked with were very friendly. If your not sure which rail to get on or where the stop is just ask another passenger. Here is a link for the BART and where to get on and off, it is very helpful - http://www.bart.gov/stations/quickplanner/quickplanner.asp
Have a great trip. I plan on posting information about San Francisco in the near future on my blog. http://jennings-travelnotes.blogspot.com

realistically it's probably forty minutes from the airport to the pier on a weekday.
