Juan loves making home improvements. His next project is his backyard. He wants to place a 2ft wide marble walkway around his pool. The rectangular pool measures 15ft wide and 20ft long.

Draw a diagram of Juan's pool and walkway. (Label the dimensions)

Find the area of the walkway that surrounds the pool.

Juan found a good sale at Marble World. The marble that he wants to place around his pool costs $25 per square foot. How much will Juan spend on the marble to make the walkway around his pool? (Round to the naerest hundredth)

Your diagram should consist of a inner rectangle 20ft long by 15ft wide and a outer rectangle 24ft long by 19ft wide. The area between the inner and outer rectangle is the walkway.

Area of the walkway = (24 x 19)-(20x15) = 156ft2

Cost of marble = 156x25 = $3900

There are at least two different ways of solving this problem:
1) Break up the walkway into 4 rectangular strips, making sure corners don't overlap. Measure their areas and add them up
2) Or take the area of the entire setting (walkway plus pool) minus the surface area of the pool. So you're subtracting one rectangle (the pool) that's inside another one.

To use the second method, we know the area of the pool is 15*20. Since the walkway is 2ft wide all around the pool, the length of the whole area is 4 feet more and the width is 4 feet more, so the whole area is (15+4)*(20+4).

So we have
(15+4)*(20+4) - 15(20)
19*24 - 15*20
456 - 300 = 156 square feet
Now multiply this by $25 to find cost for the marble.

Pool dimensions
l = 20 ft
w = 15 ft
Area of pool = l*w = 20(15) = 300 sq ft
As walkway is two ft wide from all sides of the pool
The rectangle dimensions of the walkway including pool
l = 20 +(2+2 )= 20 + 4 = 24 ft
w =15 + (2+2 )= 15 + 4 + 19ft
area of walkway including pool = (24) (19) = 456 sq ft
So area of walkway that surrounds the pool =Area of rectangle including pool and walkway - area of pool =
456 - 300 = 156 sq ft
cost of marble per sq ft = 25$
So cost of total marble for walkway = 156 *25 = $3900

The outside dimension of the walkway is (20+4)(15+4) while the dimension of the pool is 20*15, so the walkway itself is 24*19 - 20*15 = 156 sq ft

The cost is 156 * $25 = $3,900

draw a diagram and you'll see the area of the walkway is the difference between the area of the big rectangle and the area of the pool

the big rectange is 24ft x 29ft

Area = 24*29 - 20*15
Area = 156ft^2

156ft^2 * $25/1ft^2 = $3,900

$3,500.00. (ps. $25/sf isn't a sale price.)
