wasn't Byrd the democrat that started the longest fillabuster of all time fighting the civil rights act of 1964 , backed by 80% of the democrat party.

Good point. It seems like a double standard to me. And Byrd is also a former Exalted Cyclops of the KKK, and a well documented racist. Why the democrats elects him over and over is a mystery to me.

"In 1942, 24-year-old Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), whose parades in Matoaka, West Virginia, he had witnessed in his childhood. He was unanimously elected Exalted Cyclops"

Yes Byrd started by holding the floor for 14 hours but Strom Thurmond's filibuster of the civil rights act of '57 was 10 hours and 14 minutes longer than Byrd's. Other people held the floor for a total of 83 days in '64. Interstingly the '64 bill passed with the overwhelming support of both parties. As a result of this, LB Johnson's banning of segregated parties at Democratic National Conventions, and the Democratic Party's support for the Voter's Rights Act in 1965 most white supremists and segreationists switch to the Republican Party. This completed a trend that started with Thurmond leaving the Democratic Party, starting his own party and Ffnally ending up a Republican and ended with most segregationists member of the Republican Party (two notable exceptions who never changed were Al Gore Sr. and Robert Byrd). This was the party that started as a bunch of abolitionist Quakers and free-soiler midwesterners (with a few manifest destiny types in there as well) ended up a "state's rights" party that tried to delay voting rights and integration of public schools. The two parties switched their stance on civil rights in 20 years.

To make it worse, byrd was a keagle in the KKK. For the uninformed, a keagle has the sole responsibility of recruiting new members into the Klan.

But who cares- look at kennedy the murderer, kerry the coward, carter the worst president in history, clinton enough said on that one.

Their standards are lower than whale sh*t

TS2 - what a joke - what do you think he's going to say - "I really enjoyed lynching them on a night with a full moon because you see their eyes bulging out of their heads better." Want to buy a bridge? What a laugh.

Because he said he was sorry. Then they all held hands lit candles and sang Kum Ba Yah.

Then they all had a good cry, and byrd said I love you guys.

This just shows they have NO moral compass. When a Republican gets caught at least he has the decency to step down. A democrat tho looks at it like a badge of honor.

Because Byrd gave up his racist ways and is now a strong supporter of civil rights.

Compare this to the leader of the segregation forever 1948 Dixiecrat campaign, Strom Thurmond.

Most of the older U. S. Senators from the deep South, like Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, Phil Gramm, Trent Lott, and Robert Byrd were all Southern Democratic bigots in their youth, but while most of these went on to become bigotted "Dixiecrats", and then Republicans, Democratic Senator Robert Byrd renounced his past and became more Liberal. This is the way he answered the question posed to him on CNN by African American reporter Bernie Shaw in Dec. 1993:

Q: "What has been your biggest mistake and your biggest success?"

A: "Well, it's easy to state what has been my biggest mistake. The greatest mistake I ever made was joining the Ku Klux Klan. And I've said that many times. But one cannot erase what he has done. He can only change his ways and his thoughts. That was an albatross around my neck that I will always wear. You will read it in my obituary that I was a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

Contrast that with an interview Thurmond gave Joseph Stroud of the Charlotte Observer in July 1998 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his presidential bid on the segregationist Dixiecrat ticket. Asked if he wanted to apologize, Thurmond (speaking apparently for Senate Republican Majority Leader Trent Lott, as well) said, "I don't have anything to apologize for," and "I don't have any regrets." Asked if he thought the Dixiecrats were right, Thurmond said, "Yes, I do."

NEO, It wasn't 80% of the Democratic Party. It was the southern wing of the Democratic Party that opposed civil rights. These guys were CONSERVATIVES.

EMPHASIS ADDED BY ME

"Senator Richard Russell, Democrat from Georgia, led the so-called opposition forces. The group was also known as the "((SOUTHERN BLOC))." It was composed of eighteen ((SOUTHERN)) Democrats and one Republican, John Tower of Texas. Although a hopeless minority, the group exerted much influence because Senate rules virtually guaranteed unlimited debate unless it was ended by cloture. The "((SOUTHERN BLOC))" relied on the filibuster to postpone the legislation as long as possible, hoping that support for civil rights legislation throughout the country would falter. The Democratic leadership and Humphrey could not control the ((SOUTHERN WING)) of the party."

He was also an officer of the WV KKK (Klegle), but you have to remember, he is one of the leaders of the Democrat party and one of the members they are most proud of. No way they would kick him out.

Byrd renounced racism after one of his relatives was killed.

And since then, I couldnt be prouder of the man. He is a true American patriot and statesman.

Well there is a difference. He's a Democrat and there are excuses, under those circumstances.

Get used to it. The whiners can't deal with the truth and get angry if you call them on things such as this. :)
