My favorite day trip is the Mt. Charleston, Toiyabe National Forest area. It's only 36 miles North of Las Vegas on Hwy 95.

They have hiking trails, picnic areas & camping. It's very scenic and a good 30 degrees cooler than LV.
This is a cool one that most tourists don't know about

If you're into the outdoors, you might check out the Bass Pro Shop at Silverton >They also have a huge salt water Aquarium with thousands of fish. They feed the Manta Rays 3 times a day, 1:30pm - 4:30pm - 7:30pm and on Thursday's through Sunday's from 2pm-7pm they have mermaids.
