I am an old fuddy-duddy on this issue. Delay taking your baby out in public as long as possible. Even in summer there are lots of viruses going around.

This is even more important during winter flu season. Babies don't have some magical immunity.

If your baby does get some sort of infection, you the parents are the ones who have to attend to him or her. Is it worth it?

I have gotten different answers from my Docs and the nurses at the hospital on this one. I would say whenever you are comfortable, just don't let anyone touch him/her and make sure you wash or sanitize your hands before touching the baby because the cart handles and credit card keypads at the stores can be really germy. I took both my kids out pretty early 1-2 weeks and they didn't get sick. My son was a week early. If you are breastfeeding the baby will get a lot of immunity protection. Good luck and enjoy!

Now days, most people say not to take baby out until 6 weeks, or when the doc gives permission.

I took my son out in public when he was only three days old. We went out to eat at our favorite sub shop.

Our son went where we went. At first it was just short trips because I didn't feel well enough to be out for long, but by the time he was 4 weeks old we took him everywhere.

He was 3 weeks late, didn't get any shots until he was 4 months old, and was exclusivly breastfed. He is almost a year and a half now and has had no major illness. One ear infection and two colds.

I didn't take my baby out until she was 2 weeks old but that was just to do some shopping. We really didn't go anywhere unless we had to until she was almost 2 months. I believe that a baby needs to be home to get used to its surroundings, and learn to be comfortable there, and I know alot of people will disagree but I don't think it is such a good thing to be carting your child around 3 days after it is born.

My first boy was 1 mth early. When we were release from the hospital, it was a sunny Sunday. the next day, we have to bring him to the nearby polyclinic to have him check for jaundice. Immediately, after getting his blood count report and seeing the doc, he was again sent back to the hospital for high level of jaundice. He was being put under the light for 2 days.

Once he was release from the hospital, we have to continue bringing him to the polyclinic to have his blood tested for jaundice. We continued being him there till he was given the all clear OK sign by the doc when he is 3 wks old.

So i can say that he was almost out every day for a few hrs from the time he was born till 3 wks old

Re. "Babies don't have some magical immunity" -- ah, but if you, say, take them out and nurse them in a park, you're building up their immunities in more ways than one.* It IS quite magical in some ways...

Baby IS 'out' at birth. Hospitals are disease-riddled, pathogen-laced, unpleasant places, and Target has some really quite nice baby clothes to boot, so go!

* And provided you don't carry a parasol, the vitamin D is good, too

It's smart to be especially careful with a premature baby. I took mine out at about two weeks of age BUT she was in a sling so that nobody was inclined to get close enough to touch or breathe on her. Also if you're breastfeeding the baby will get antibodies from you, assuming you're immune to whatever it is.

I took my son to a daycare (owned and run by a family friend - my old daycare lady) the day after we got out of the hospital and also to a highschool that day to show some of my old teachers (I just turned 21) and he was fine and didn't get sick or anything. He was 3 days late. I would just ask your doctor to be sure if you are uncomfertable about taking him out.

my son was a week early and we made a trip to Wal-Mart within a few days of leaving the hospital. they really don't interact or touch anything in the enviroment, and more then likely she will just sleep the entire time. i don't see anything wrong with it. just don't let strangers touch her. and anything you might touch that could have a lot of germs, just wash your hands or use some hand sanitizer before handling your baby again.

2 months is the good time, but if u really want to take him out, just see if he is healthy and check the weather also the sick season ... if many people out there are got cold, then ur tiny baby will easily get it too
