What's his rationale? education doesn't cure hunger and despair.
food and shelter help a lot if I'm not mistaken. why do we feed the world's homeless when people are starving and without hope and shelter right here in America.

I'm surprised you fail to see the answer right in front of you. A skilled educated worker has the means to find work and feed himself, while someone with no education or skills requires handouts in perpetuity. The genius of Bill Gates is to realize that investing in feeding the poor gets short term relief, while investing in education leads to permanent relief.

Actually education breaks the cycle of hunger and despair. You have heard of the saying, give a mana fish, and he eas for a day, teach a man to fish and he can eat for life? Same rationale, educate people and their will be less stife (down the road). Your point on taking care of the people in the world before our own is well taken. It seems tobe the trend-Angelina Jolie, Madonna, etc. Why not American babies?

Also, Bill Gates has a diagnosis of Aspergers syndrome-on the Autism spectrum, this might be another reason he views education as being imperative.

To the contrary, education does cure hunger and despair. If you feed the hungry today, you will have the same hungry people tomorrow. Nothing will have changed except you will have less food. If you educate people in a way that enables them to be productive, they will be able to find jobs and afford to feed themselves. Hunger will be replaced with a full belly and despair will turn to hope for a better future. Help the poor turn from the slavery of dependency to the freedom of being productive.

By investing in education, Bill Gates is investing in our future. Feeding the homeless only helps today.

The truth is, it doesn't matter how Bill Gates spends his money- there will always be someone who thinks he should be doing something else with it, or that he is being short-sighted.

I'm just grateful that he is making an effort to share his wealth with people he doesn't know and helping to educate people who otherwise wouldn't have access to education, aren't you?

Education is the ONLY thing that can potentially cure hunger and despair.

Ever hear the old saying "Give a man a fish and you feed him today... TEACH a man to fish and you feed him for life."?

Giving out free meals to the hungry will only succeed in creating dependence on more and greater handouts.

By the way, Bill Gates doesn't owe You an explanation for anything.

A lot of homeless people have mental disorders much like people with no empathy.

As far as Bill Gates is concerned, he probably believes, like most people, that education is the key for most people to become successful, even though he himself dropped out of university to become the richest man in the world.

No college or university can teach anyone how to become rich.

Bill Gates does a lot of charity fund raising but sometimes I have to question his way of thinking. He supports education which is great but then petitions the government to lift the limit on the amount of workers that he can bring to the U.S. from India to work for his company. Why push education if you want to hire foreigners to do the jobs of Americans in our own country.

I would hope that if you were to ask Gates, he would answer that by spending money now on education the homeless rate will begin to decrease in 15-20 years.

I wish he would go to the homeless. He gave lots of money to my kids school West Clermont Ohio for a small school experiement and it was the worst schooling you could ever give a child. Keep his social experiements for the homeless - not with a childs education. He was the worst thing ever to our school system....now the money is ending for this the school will go back to a real education system.

well thats a really good question
the way i see it
the more educated people there are the less homeless and foodless ones there will be

also
the more educated you are the more you know about those people who need help
thus, people become educated social workers
