Archer is actually Shirō Emiya ... from the future!

Emiya gets some of his dreams crushed in the future, and thats why Archer (future self) is always saying how Emiya's idealism is so weak and narrowminded. Hope this helps a little.
[EDIT] Misread your question. Sorry. I'll explain it a little.
The Thrown of Heroes exists outside of time, so it can call heroes from the past or future. We know Emiya wanted to fight for good and to save people. At one point in time he couldn't save everyone, so he made a pact that turned him into a Guardian Spirit in order to save them. Because of this action, he could be summoned in the Holy Grail War.

i was reading a fan fic, and it said that archer was from a different dimension, so it might work, the grail can do almost anything, and the anime is not always correct, the orginal will usually tell the truth.
