If you want romance and comedy, consider:
Maison Ikkoku (kind of old-school, by Rumiko Takahashi who also did Ranma 1/2 and Inu-Yasha)
Love Hina (the classic example of the "harem anime" with lots of girls falling for one guy)
I My Me Strawberry Eggs (a little heavy on the drama, and has a teacher falling for a student).
Please Teacher (aka Onegai Teacher). A little more drama than comedy, but still lots of funny bits.
Oh My Goddess. A classic comedy, though I personally find Belldandy a little too submissive for a Goddess.
Chobits. A fair amount of comedy, but underlying is a serious story about the meaning of love and life.
Tenchi Muyo. Another "harem anime" with a sci-fi slant. Get the OAV series, not the various spin-offs (Tenchi GXP, Tenchi in Tokyo, Tenchi Universe, etc.).
