I think Fredo betrayed Mike or something like that. What I'm really interested in is what was happening at the funeral when Mike and Fredo hugged like they were making up, and then Mike looked at his bodyguard and killed Fredo later. Why did he do that if they hugged to make up? Can anyone give me a detailed description of what was happening? Didn't Mike feel that Fredo was hidding something near his back?

It all goes back to keeping your friends close and your enemies closer. The attempted hit that took place on the Don after the older brother had been set up and killed by the sisters husband, had in fact been orchestrated with the help of Fredo. Fredo had been pissed that as the middle brother he had been passed over for the mantle of Don and it was given to the baby brother- Michael.
This was what Michael was telling Fredo on the floor that New Years Eve in Cuba, " I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart".
When the Don died, Michael took out those who went after his father but because their mother adored Fredo, Michael did not make a move on him until after her death.
Fredo had been attempting to make amends but Michael kept him around and so he had been under the impression that his baby brother had forgiven him but it was not the case and he figured that out when he was going to take his nephew out to fish and Michael stopped him and he was joined by the bodyguard. He knew his fate was sealed.

Mike felt Fredo betrayed him because of the guys Fredo was doing business with in the past. Fredo and these guys tried to set Mike up and Mike was suspicious and set Fredo up instead...remember in Cuba I think? For New Years Eve? I think Fredo was sincere with his apology to Mike. After the funeral it didnt appear that Fredo was at all looking to take Mike out and he was looking more for the family side of it. He liked his nephew. Mike was paranoid.

This is one of the problems with GODFATHER 2.
The LAST thing Michael should have done was to have Fredo killed---it just showed his own weakness. He could have easily "neutralized" Fredo's danger to him in other ways.
Michael's life in Nevada was spinning out of control, perhaps because his heart wasn't in it. He is portrayed throughout this movie as practically a refugee--his home isn't a sanctuary, his family has fallen apart, he just is inept at everything, the complete opposite of his father in the first movie.
