You are right about it not being quick or easy, but you must start somewhere. It sounds difficult, but do one room at a time. Start with the easiest room first. Once that is done, it will give you a feeling of accomplishment and some adrenaline for the others. On each room, work as a team. Get everything out of the room. It might sound labor intensive, but it is necessary. Put back only the items you need and that NICELY fit in the room so that it will appear roomy to people considering purchasing your home. Have 4 boxes...a back in room box, a keep for later box, a donate box, and a junk box. Consider renting a storage unit while you are showing the house to potential buyers. a small storage unit \is pretty inexpensive and the house will sell much easier if it is not cluttered. While everything is out of the room, vacuum it, clean up any ugly stains with a good carpet cleaner. I like the blue can of Woolite spray and it smells wonderful. Also clean around the baseboards with a vacuum cleaner attachment or a wrung out soap and water rag. Clean the window sill and the windows, replace any light bulbs, organize the closet (yes, people do look in them) and you're done!!! Also, wipe down the door with a soap and water rag (Murphy's Oil Soap does great) to get all the smudges off...then put the needed furniture back, dust it, and put only a few items on each piece or it will look cluttered. Fill your boxes and on to the next room.... In the bathrooms, start with the shower and toilet, then the sinks. use a mildew cleaner and a wonderfully fresh smelling cleaning spray to make things glisten. Pay special attention to the floors too. They should be clean and glistening and make sure light fixtures are dusted and cleaned too. Your kitchen should be spotless!!! Since you have a pretty large family, you guys could probably do it in about a week, but it will take getting rid of/storing a lot of stuff to get a nice, clean, movein feel. Good luck and I hope this helps. If time and budget allow, paint is an excellent way to refresh a tired house!!!! Go with a neutral, though....

Get the oldest kids to clean up their own rooms and help the younger kids clean up while you and your spouse get the rest of the house done. On a Saturday get the inside done and on Sunday get everyone to go outside and clean up the yard. Kids can pick up outside toys while the adults mow, trim, powerwash, etc.
