I went as a coke can once.
Take a red piece of poster board and look a coke can and paint what you see. It turned out really cute, and I wore red clothes under it. It takes about 30 min-1 hour. It is also cheap.

Find out what is hot for this year and go with it, myself, I have been in my costume for three years and still everyone loves it.
