You are not doign anything wrong and it is good taht you are giving thoughtfelt and intelligent input but the person in question may prefer another persons answer or your answer didnt answer their question fully whereas somebody elses did.
I just think you should keep going the way you are and im sure somebody will give you a best answer ;)

You got me out of semi-retirement for this answer. First, I took the liberty of grabbing your answer, at random, to the question
"How early can newborns fly?"
Your answer : "hash I saw this question and thought maybe it was about birds. I was like newborns flying? they dint have wings. Think I got some of what Jessica Simpson was eating...not sure if it was Tuna or chicken though :)"
Now, as a coach, I am not prepared to judge your answer. All I can do is as you how you would respond to this answer if the question was yours. Did you ever answer the actual question? I also encourage you to have fun here, and not be concerned about "Best Answers" We are all here for fun first, unless this becomes your identity, If it does, it may be a lot of power to give away to strangers.
Next, I always read the profiles of the answerer before I answer a question, or, for that matter, award a "Best Answer". That way, I am able to communicate my answer in a way so that it will better match the place I "sense" generated the question on a deeper level, thereby touching them on a higher level, getting their attention, and giving my answer a little more meaning to them, so I hope. Still, I often find that other factors such as friendship, "politics" or, the intangible WTF were they thinking? often amaze me when the actual choice is made. If I see this happening too often I cease wasting my energy on someone who isn't interested. Whatever, the reason, I do not attach their choice to my self-esteem.
Lastly, I do not see too many profiles that are "shared" here, and I, personally, prefer to address my answers to one user. What if others here felt the same way?

Either:
1. You might be answering questions that are too popular. For example, even if you give a really thorough, informative answer, chances are it won't be picked best if there are 29 others. The asker is bound to find one he/she likes more than yours.
2. You might no be giving the asker the answer he/she wants to hear. Most askers don't want sarcastic remarks as a response, and seriously, 99% of askers don't want you to scold them for asking a question, or hear you talk about how they shouldn't want to do that.

You have only answered 5 or 6 questions like a year ago and then a whole bunch that are still open for answers.
wait one of them will get best answer. If you have nothing again for a few days go back and check the questions you answered and if it is in voting vote for your answer.
Good luck
Keep answering
don't wait a year this time.

It is important to answer only from your experience and not to glam it up with boiler plate responses or "no-duh" answers.
infuse yourself into the answers you give. people want to trust the answer (especially if it is a serious question).
the answers we give are not always the best answer for a particular question.
take pride in the fact that you've answered at all. Yahoo Answers isn't a race for the gold. It is a community of people who want to help each other (ideally, anyway).

Sometimes...you need to be witty, sometimes funny, and it always depends on how a person might relate to your answer. Not every serious answer is a good one. Personality plays alot in how someone might choose your answer. Just keep answering..maybe not as many...it will take time...but it will begin to happen soon enough.

You aren't doing anything wrong. The "Best Answers" are selected either by voters or by the asker. Everybody is entitled to an opinion here. You can only do your best. Eventually, it'll happen.

I know what you mean. I just can't figure out sometimes what people want for an answer.
The other day I went through some answers and so many of them didn't even have thumbs up or down.
