They are non-aggressive and rarely bite unprovoked or without stress.
They are active at all hours, as opposed to the more nocturnal rodent pets.
Their kidneys have adapted to produce a minimum of waste to conserve body fluids which makes them very clean with little odor.
They are incredibly industrious and will build, construct, and enjoy elaborate networks of tunnels if given an environment that allows for it. Since they are active in the daytime, this activity is easily observed.
They are sociable creatures that enjoy the company of humans and other gerbils. For this reason gerbils should be kept and raised in the company of other gerbils as solitary life can induce unnecessary stress.[2][3][4]
They are small and easy to handle
They are alert and will explore new environments.
They can turn everyday paper-based items such as cardboard products and brown paper bags into toys and nesting material.

I think gerbils are for people who do not want too big of an animal to walk and really take care of (like a dog), do not care for animals walking on furniture on on the stoves and tables (cats), and they are afraid of rats. Because, they can be "pets". And for some reason, this is before you upgrade to a hamster.
It is like a "safe" pet for those who do not a reptiles as a pet.
Give me a dog any day.

Actually, I've had gerbils, and they're cool little pets. They're playful and fun to watch. They can also come in neat colors.

Lol...great question...They're cute, but they don't do anything. You can't really play with them like you can a dog. Also, their moms eat them when the cage gets over crowded. What a crappy life. Hamsters, too.
