If you stand to the side about 10 foot away and spray the side it will soak through the entire nest and have the same effect as if you hit the hole with the spray. The best time to do it is early evening when most of the hornets are in the nest.

Use the spray; the secret is to use it either really early in the morning, or really late at night. The spray shoots out several feet, so stand off to the side, and aim up towards the hole. Use the whole can in one spray, that way you will kill any hornets that try to escape.

As stated above. Night and early morning. Preferably when the temperature is 50 F or below, which may be a while now. Always be ready to run. Wasp die off annually and only females remain over winter to return in spring to start building their army again. They never return to the old nest. Try to locate Wasp in early spring and you not have so many to deal with. The link give a lot of information.

Purchase Sevin-5 powder. Pour some down hole after dark. You wont have any bees in the morning. Just eradicated nest with three inch hole. Had tried drowning them out, hose ran for four hours. Tried gasoline, tried other commercial stuff meant for bees.

Chlorine bleach.
Put it in a large capacity pump sprayer.
The best time of the day to do this is in the early morning about sunrise and preferably when it is humid.
Their flite is restricted when their wings a damp.
The bleach will destroy them and the nest. With the nest gone, you'll notice a short stem that it was attached to. Remove that as well, or they will come back to it.

I usually attempt to bag a nest that close to the ground. I know it is uncomfortable to get that close, but if you follow the good advise above... "early morning... cold day" you should be able to get the whole thing in a heavy plastic trash bag... tie it up.. and do one of the following... Freeze the whole darn bag... submerge in water... bury... trash man....
Good luck!

I would seriously consider waiting until night fall then throwing gasoline on the nest and using a long stick wet the end in gasoline to ignite the whole thing, but this is just me and at best hazardous.
