My parents say that when they were learning to drive that they were told not to change gears(ex.-from Reverse to Drive) while moving. Is this still true in todays cars, and if so what kind of damage can it cause?

Well, if you have a manual transmission, it will tear the cogs right off the gears. Even with an automatic, suddenly reversing the direction everything is going to create a lot of extra wear-and-tear.

On my 96 Crown Victoria, I can shift to first gear @ freeway speeds, and it just won't do it until I slow down. I can also leave it in first gear, punch the gas, and it will shift in to second and third as it gets close to red lining the engine. Never made it to forth, I try to stay under 100 mph

BTW, this car has the police package.

My 95 T-Bird could also be shifted to first gear at freeway speeds, and it also wouldn't do it until I slowed down to a safe speed. It would hold first gear from a stop and stay there until it was put in to second or drive. If you put it in second, it would start off in second gear and hold it until it was put in first (at under 40 or 45 mph) or drive (at any speed)

It does accelerate wear on the transmission, but the computer on most cars isn't going to let you destroy it. There are a lot of built in safety's, and some cars won't let you neutral drop them (revving the engine in neutral and slapping it in to drive, really bad for the transmission, could take it out asap!)

How can you not change gears while moving?

I mean if I'm doing 60 km/h and then accelerate to 80 km/h and want better fuel economy I'm going to have to go from fourth to fifth once I get to about 80 km/h.

You shouldn't change into reverse while moving and many cars have a safety feature that prevents it from getting into reverse when going down from fifth to fourth.

Drive to park -never, it will damage the tranny. Reverse to drive, a slow roll won't hurt although going to fast will cause a pressure surge which could do damage. Best bet, come to a stop before changing gears.

it depends on the kind of car they where talking about. for a manual car once u clutch down, u can change to any gear of choice but it still depends on your speed at the time
