On an a different computer, I have CA security center. The firewall, spy ware blocker and virus blocker are all enabled. We have firefox, internet explorer, and windows vista.

Around two months ago, we switched from a free trial to the free CA, but the internet on the computer is basically unusable. Videos won't load most of the time, pictures only load half the time, headings are messed up, and the pages take around 3 minutes or longer to load. The computer also randomly crashes, something it didn't do before.

My father, who rarely uses the computer's internet downloaded it and refuses switch to a new one. He says I don't know what I'm talking about (which I understand I don't). He's a computer engineer so whenever I mention it he says that he's fiddling with it. Its been two months and nothing has changed.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I won't be able to do anything about it because after I mentioned it he forbid me to touch it, but I'm curious.

Yes, my brother mentioned the windows firewall to me, yes it is turned off. My dad just got angry when I asked him if the if he could turn the windows firewall on, and leave the CA virus blocker and spy ware blocker on. He said I have no idea what I'm talking about and refused to elaborate.

The firewall can create some problems, but it should not cause the computer to crash.

I have looked on the CA website. There are only free trial downloads and free scans. The free trials are time limited. After the time runs out you have to uninstall it or purchase the licence.

There are no free packages.

Are you sure he did not block you from the websites you are attempting to access and download from?

If there are 2 different virus software packages installed on the same computer, it can cause connection and other problems.

There could be a problem with the Vista operating system.

Ask you father whether or not he has been updating the security patches for Vista and CA.

Things to check for optimum computer operation:

This procedure may require a few of hours to complete.

When you start the computer and everything is finish loading from the startup:

Right click on your browser and select properties. Go to the Internet Properties

Delete cookies, Temporary Internet Files, and History.

Open My Computer and right click on C: drive; Left click on Properties; Left click on Tools; Left Click on Check Now on Error-checking; Check the two check boxes; Left Click on Start.

A message box should pop-up "Checking local disk (C:)"

It will state that Error-checking cannot run at this time; do you want to schedule it for the next time the computer is restarted?

Left Click on Yes

Restart the computer.

When the computer restarts, it will start running check disk.
Do not touch anything; let it complete running. It will look for errors on the Hard Drive and attempt to repair them.

After it is finished, and you are logged back onto the computer, Open My Computer and right click on C: drive; Left click on Properties; Left click on Tools; Left Click; Left Click on Defragment Now; Make Volume C: is Highlight by Left Click On C:

Left Click Defragment. It will show 2 displays. the top display is how badly the Hard Drive is fragmented (red shows fragmented files - this can slow down the computer considerably if it is over 2 or 3 %)

This is usually the longest part of this procedure.

Let it complete.

Next attempt to update CA.

After CA is updated, run it manually with a complete scan.

There are other things that can be done, but the above procedure is a good start for a healthy computer.

Good Luck

The problem with this is that your firewall is too heavily searching every bit of code you are processing as you browse the internet.

You need to go to the CA control panel and try this first: Add a website to your white list and try going to it. If that doesn't work for you, try checking your router firewall to see if it's blocking many incoming packets.

Windows Vista is unstable after all in my opinion and it could be causing your random crashes.

I am additionally utilizing utorrent. What I do is, I placed utorrent within the firewall exception record. :) Hope it solves ur hindrance. U can move to the exception record through clicking: Start > manage panel > window firewall> difference settings > exceptions. :) then, u simply have got to pick the application that u desire to make an exception. :)) Hope it is helping. :)
