1. 3x+5=23
Subtract 5 from both sides (1st rule in Algebra - whatever you do to one side you must to do the other)
3x+5-5=23-5
3x=18
Divide both sides by 3, to get x by itself
3x/3=18/3=6

2. 4x + 2 = 7x + 1
Subtract 4X and 1 from each side
4x-4x +2 -1 = 7x - 4x +1 -1
1=3x
Divide by 3
1/3=x
x=1/3

3. 8 - 3x = 2 + 4x
Add 3x and subtract 2 from each side. Do you see the trend of always getting all the x'es on one side and all the numbers on the other? Do one step at a time if it's more comfortable for you.
8 - 3x + 3x - 2 = 2 +4x +3x -2
6 = 7x
Divide by 7
x=6/7

4. 5 + 9x = 5
Subtract 5 from each side
9x = 0
x = 0

Some basic tips:
1. Always be fair so whatever you do to one side, do to the other.
2. Write everything out to avoid mistakes
3. If in doubt, go one step at a time
4. Plug the value for x back into your original equation as a check.

Good luck.

1. subtract the 5 from both sides
this makes it 3x=18
then divide the 3 to get the x by itself. thats the whole object of the equation to get x by itself.
this makes it x=6

2. take the 2 to the other side. and the 7x to the other side.
4x-7x=-2+1
now add/subtract
-3x=-1
divide again
x=1/3

3. again take like terms to one side.
3x-4x=-8+2
-x=-6
divide by negative 1
x=6
4. 9x=5-5
9x=0
x= 0/9 which in this case there is no answer its an impossible equation. bc you cant have a 0 in a fraction.

Ok--first move all the x's to one side of the equation and all the numbers to the other side. When you shift something from one side to another, change the sign.
1.) 3x + 5 = 23
3x + 5 (-5) = 23 -5 (I am subtracting 5 from both sides)
3x = 18 now divide both side by 3
x = 6

Try the other 3 problems . Good luck.

For all problems we want to get our variable, x, on side of the equations and our constants, numbers, on the other side of the equation. From there we will have x set equal to a number. We can make sure our answer is valid by substituting it back into each equation for x (the equation should end up true.)

1.) 3x+5=23
3x=23-5
3x=18
x=(18/3)
x=6

^In this cakse we have 3x+5 on one side of the equation and 23 on the other. The easiest way to start is to subtract 5 from each side. What we do to one side of the equation we must do to the other. So we subtract 5 from the left side, leaving us with 3x and we subtrac 5 from the right side leaving us with 18 (23-5=18.) Now we have 3x=18, in order to get x by itself we must divide both sides of the equation by 3. (3x/3)=x, and 18/3=6. Now we have x=6. If we plug 6 back in for x we find: (3*6)+5=23 - 18+5=23 - 23=23, Our x is correct.

2.) 4x+2=7x+1
4x=7x+1-2
4x=7x-1
4x-7x=-1
-3x=-1
x=(-1/-3)
x=(1/3)

We now have variables and constants on both sides of the equation. I always like to start with the simplest steps and work to the more advanced steps. That being said I chose to get all of my constants to one side of the equation. I chose to subtract 2 from both sides of the equation, leaving us with 4x=7x+1-2. From here I simplified, 4x=7x-1. Now we must get our variable on one side of the equation, that opposite of our constant. Now I subtract 7x from each side of the equation: 4x-7x=-1. We can now combine like terms: -3x=1. From here we divide both sides by three to get our variable by itself: x=(-1/-3). We now have x=(1/3.) Upon pluging (1/3) back into the original equation we find that it is a true answer.

Follow either of the [previous procedures for the equations below, as necessary.

3.) 8-3x=2+4x
8=2+4x+3x
8=2+7x
8-2=7x
6=7x
x=(6/7)

4.)5+9x=5
9x=5-5
9x=0
x=0

Sorry. I am waiting for the answers. The only reason i do not have my AA degree is because of two algebra classes. I am sure wishing you well. Hope all go o.k for you. Now: i must say thanks to all of you and it was not even my question. The tip really did ring a bell with me.
